TRIANGLES PLAYING CARDS

90 CARDS, UNLIMITED GAMES

I'll be the first to admit it: I have a love/hate relationship to my own game series Triangles. Why? Because each deck is like a set of traditional playing cards with a twist, not a game of its own. Let me explain.

Each deck is made of 90 cards. 81 are pieces of triangles, "cut" in one of three ways: horizontal, vertical and centered. The cuts can be compared to the suits of traditional playing cards. Three triangle pieces of the same cut can be combined to create a complete triangle. Furthermore, nine of the cards in a Triangles deck are whole triangles, typically used as jokers.

With these unique playing cards you can play a wide variety of games, just as with traditional playing cards. But because everything comes in threes — three cuts, three colors, and the numbers 1-3 — the games are different from those of traditional playing cards. Each deck comes with printed rules for two games, but any of the games can be played with any of the decks. The differences between the decks are purely visual.

Why do I have a love/hate relationship to these cards? Because of when it's socially suitable to play with them. My other games are perfect to bring out at any time that you would bring out a board game or themed card game. Triangles, on the other hand, is suitable to bring out at a time when you would typically play a regular card game rather than a board game.

THIS IS TRIANGLES

Forget Aces vs Queens, Spades vs Hearts, and Red vs Black. Triangles is a unique concept by indie card game developer Sträckspelsfabriken. A deck is made of 90 cards as opposed to 52 in a traditional deck of playing cards, and each card represents a piece of a triangle. Inspired by the likes of SET everything comes in threes, opening up a wealth of game possibilities — you can play any number of games with the Triangles playing cards.

Each box includes a complete deck and rules for two games uniquely designed to be played with the Triangles cards. Check out the options below, and keep scrolling to learn more about the functionality of the cards.

INTRODUCTION:

The nature of Triangles is similar to but also wildly different from traditional playing cards. There are three colors, three "cuts" which can be compared to the suits of traditional playing cards, and the numbers 1-3. Three pieces of the same cut can build a complete triangle which is relevant in some games, but not all. Learn more about the functions of the cards below.

The Cuts

Each card represents a piece of a triangle, cut in one of three ways: horizontal, vertical and centered. These are the suits.

The Colors

Each cut comes in three different colors which vary between decks. In games where the goal is to build triangles by combining pieces, a triangle made of only pieces of the same color is typically referred to as a "pure" triangle. Triangles made of a mix of colors are often called "unpure" or "dirty". A triangle can be made of pieces of different colors as long as the cut remains the same.

The Numbers

Each card has a numeric value between 1-3. The numbers 1, 2 and 3 of the same cut make up a complete triangle.

The Jokers

There are 9 so called whole triangles which are typically jokers or trump cards depending on the game. In some games, these are taken out of the deck before play. The jokers have a color and cut, but no number as they do not represent a triangle piece.

THE GAMES

A deck of Triangles playing cards comes with printed rules for two games designed especially for the Triangles cards. You can download the rules below:

TRIANGLE MAYHEM

Base game included in all decks. Complete multiple triangles simultaneously at the center of the table.

TRIANGLE TRICKS

Play the highest value of a defined color to take the trick. In case of a tie between two players the trick goes on for all players, opening up for more points and strategic play. This game is included in the Original deck.

COLOR DRAW

Draw and discard cards from three piles divided by color, to complete triangles in your hand. Triangles made of pieces of the same color are worth 3 points, triangles made of one piece of each color are 2 points, and triangles with a combination of two colors are 1 point. This game is included in the Oceans deck.

21/15/9-CARD TRIANGLES

Draw and discard from a draw pile to complete triangles in your hand. Later, combine pieces in your hand with pieces that you have previously played. First to get rid of all cards wins. This game is included in the Beetles deck.

Visit the world cities of London (purple), Los Angeles (blue) and Sydney (orange) in the original deck of Triangles playing cards. Stunning cards with photography from the three cities. Includes a printed rule book with the base game Triangle Mayhem and the unique game Triangle Tricks.

THE GAME "TRIANGLE TRICKS": Created for the "Trick Taking Challenge" hosted by TheGameCrafter.com, Triangle Tricks is a trick-taking game with a twist. Follow the played color but play tactical to stack up more points in a single trick. Odds are the trick will be a tie since Triangles playing cards are only numbered 1-3. Multiple rounds can be played for the same trick before a winner is found. Do you go all in from the start or save your best cards to stab your opponent in the back later on?

THE GAME "COLOR DRAW": A fun triangle-building game in which you're faced with three draw piles, one of each color. Draw and discard cards to complete triangles in your hand. Pure triangles, meaning all cards are of the same color, are worth 3 points. Triangles with one piece of each color are worth 2 points, while mixed triangles with cards from only two colors re worth 1 point.

The box includes a printed rule book with the base game Triangle Mayhem and the unique game 21/15/9-card Triangles.

THE GAME "21/15/9-CARD TRIANGLES": This triangle-building game is perhaps the most complex of the bunch. Complete triangles in your hand by drawing and discarding cards. Play completed triangles to "save" pieces on the table in front of you. You can use previously saved pieces as part of future triangles to get rid of cards quicker. Jokers allow you to steal pieces from opponents. First to get rid of all cards in their hand wins.
