HIGHEST BIDDER

A card game for 2-5 players.

When people ask me which game is the best among the ones I've made, Highest Bidder is always my answer. Why? Because of how incredibly deep such a simple game is and how accessible it is to any kind of game group.

In Highest Bidder you bid cards from your hand on cards at the center of the table that score points. You must decide how many cards to bid on each available point-scoring card, as well as which order to play the cards in. At the count of three all players will place their bids simultaneously, face down in piles in front of them. Cards are then reveled one at a time around the table and special effect cards will impact the outcome.

Highest Bidder utilizes what's known as "programmed actions" — if you place a bid with five cards in it, the cards will be revealed in the order you placed them in. Depending on the cards revealed by other players, the results can be utterly hilarious. Your clever plan can go satisfyingly well or horribly wrong. Regardless, laughs are guaranteed!

A man named Dave Merrell from EverythingBoardGames.com said it best: "It is very fun to play and although you get cheated at times, it feels like it’s your own fault because that’s the order you placed your cards in."

Highest Bidder: Art Auction features incredible work by Swedish artist Pernilla Lindgren. I mean, the details are amazing!

PREMIUM VS. BASIC VERSION

Highest Bidder comes in two versions: the original which features simple, colorful, abstract cards and all the original Bid Cards and Effect Cards. And Highest Bidder: Art Auction which features artwork by Swedish artist Pernilla Lindgren as well as a number of advanced bonus cards.

With Art Auction you not only get a prettier game, but also even greater strategic depth. The new advanced bonus cards and a second rule booklet introducing them add more value to the game. You can still play the base game without the advanced cards. Even though the base version is just as fun to play, Art Auction gives you a lot more possibilities to customize your game experience.

My goal when creating Highest Bidder was to make an auction/bidding game with depth. I'm a fan of the likes of Modern Art but always found such games to be shallow or predictable.

The lack of proper artwork was the main issue people had in initial reviews of Highest Bidder. Some players, however, tell me that they prefer the original because the cards are more colorful and less visually messy.

If you're having trouble deciding, definitely go with Art Auction. You get so much more from the game with the new cards! In fact, when I introduced a friend to the base game and later, once he was comfortable with the rules, added the advanced cards he exclaimed, "You get ALL of that with the game?"

In short, Highest Bidder is a highly entertaining, visually stunning and strategically deep game with a surprisingly simple idea of programmed actions in an auction/bidding game.
